Holistic Health is a wellness approach to life. It is an ongoing process. Rather than focusing on illness or specific parts of the body, this ancient approach to health considers the whole person and how one interacts within their environment. It reinforces the connection of mind, body, and spirit. Being healthy doesn’t necessarily mean the absence of disease or illness.  It is about living as completely and optimally as possible with the limitations you face, while at the same time pursuing a goal to achieve maximum well-being. Holistic Health people accept responsibility for their own level of well-being, and everyday choices are used to take charge of one’s own health.

Definition of Holistic Health

Holistic health is sometimes referred to as complimentary health, alternative health or natural health. Within the holistic health concept you're likely to find a variety of different treatment approaches. Treatment approaches are highly individualized for the unique needs of each individual. It looks for the underlying causes of symptoms, rather than just covering up the symptoms with a drug. These treatments can include energy healing, acupressure, nutritional health counseling, massage, homeopathy, meditation, dietary changes, environmental health, vitamin supplementation, exercise, yoga, herbs and organic sustainable farming. They all promote balance and harmony for the individual, society and the planet.

Holistic Health & Sustainability

We live in a time of great imbalance. There are more pollutants and chemicals in our food and environment than ever before. We face epidemic rates of obesity and chronic disease. Most people have poor diet and exercise habits. Almost everyone in our fast-paced society struggles to manage daily stress, and many are afflicted with chronic depression and anxiety.

Because of all this, consumers are concerned for their health. There has never been a greater need for the holistic health approach, and people are demanding medical alternatives and actively seeking better options for their personal wellness. This has resulted in constant research and development in the wellness industry.

Professionals trained in holistic health schools are in high demand. While no holistic health practitioner or wellness professional can be an expert in every form of health restoration, each offers a unique toolbox of skills and knowledge to help patients achieve whole body health and balance.

The Future of Holistic Health

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that the key factors influencing an individual’s state of health have not changed much over the past 20 years. The quality of medical care is only 10%. Heredity accounts for 18% and the environment is 19%.

The most obvious choices people make each day is what they “consume” both physically and mentally. The cells in a person’s body are constantly being replaced. New cells are built from what is available. Harmful substances or lack of needed building blocks in the body can result in imperfect cells, unable to do what is required to keep that person healthy. Similarly, on the non-physical level, a person’s mental attitudes are “built” from what they see and hear.

The majority of illnesses and premature death can be traced back to lifestyle choices. There are the well-known dangers connected with drugs, alcohol, nicotine, and unprotected sexual activity. Less recognized is the impact of excesses in things like sugar, caffeine, and negative attitudes. Combined with deficiencies in exercise, nutritious foods, and self-esteem, these gradually accumulate harmful effects. In time they diminish the quality of the “environment” within that human being, and can set the stage for illness to take hold. Quality of life, now and in the future, is actually being determined by a multitude of seemingly unimportant choices made everyday.
